Haider Ramzan’s Blog on Eye Camp
Introduction
My name is Haider Ramzan, and I am the son of Sajid Ramzan (Chair of PakTrust.org).
PakTrust recently held a surgical eye camp at Riaz Hospital in Mirpur (Azad Kashmir) on April 10th and 11th 2010. Nearly 800 people attended and 121 cataract operations where performed, by the the Prevention of Blindness Trust (POB). This was one of the largest and most successful surgical eye camp to ever happen in Mirpur. I am delighted at this as it is a great achievement by PakTrust.org, POB Trust and Raiz Hospital.
Out of these 800 patients checked by the doctors of POB Trust, 121 patients had cataract operations. Many more patients received free glasses and eye drops. Just like these patients, the patients who had operations each received sunglasses, to wear to protect the eyes, tablets, to help them recover, and eye drops, to help them recover from the operations.
Eye Camp Day 1: 10th April 2010
On the first day I had to wake up at 6:30 am after a late night preparing for the event. It was a hard as I was a volunteer but thankfully I survived. The first day lasted 15-16 hours and I lasted for 12-13 hours! The POB Trust checked around 500 patients on the first day. Around about 23 operations were complete on this day, as most of he day had be dedicated to checking the patients and giving them glasses and eye drops if necessary. My main job on this day was to receive the patients from the operations theatre and find the person they were with. The operation theatre had 4 operation beds and 2 surgeons on the first day. However on the second the another surgeon/doctor joined the team after making a journey from Lahore. Those patients who I received and had come from far were invited to stay over the night in the ward. Everybody accepted and stayed.
Eye Camp Day 2: 11th April 2010
On the second day, the patients who had stayed where checked by the doctors and where discharged after getting there sunglasses, eye drops and tablets. I was amazing seeing all the happy patients walking down the stairs and out of the door. Some of these patients where interviewed by country manager, Faisal Shazad. They said many great things about the eye camp and I am very thankful to them. Meanwhile the PakTrust.org administration team received another 400 patients. Also on the second day the remaining operations were done and thanks to the 3rd doctor they were done in no time at all. My job on this day was the same as the first day, which was to receive patients from the operation theatre and find the person accompanying them. I liked this job a lot because I got to experience the true meaning of doing charity work. Also the last thing we done on this day was to visit the patients who were staying over night in the wards. This was fantastic as they were praying for the good work of PakTrust.org to continue. I remember this clearly and will cherish this moment for the rest of my life.
Conclusion
This eye camp was a tremendous success and I am very thankful to the doctors of the POB Trust, the staff of Riaz Hospital who played an important role and all the volunteers of PakTrust.org. I sure hope to experience this sort of event again and let it be a monumental success.
